Requesting Your Movie Recommendations!

Hi friends and loyal readers! This is a request for all you fellow movie lovers AND novices out there to help a girl out. As many of you know, I'm tackling the tough challenge of watching 365 Movies this year—and while I'm certainly counting movies that I've seen before, I'd ideally love to see as many new flicks as possible. But whether I've seen it or not, I'd love to have more recommendations!

That's where you come in. I would appreciate so-very-much-with-a-cherry-on-top your suggestions for movies I should see—or even movies you'd like to see me review—because I sense a rut coming on if I don't get a few new titles in the mix. As many as you can name, I'm curious to hear from you! Netflix, VUDU, Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, and my local library (maybe even an old Blockbuster deep in the Valley) are all at my disposal, so name away!

They can be anything really, from any time period or any genre (except I get skerred watching graphic horror, so... keep that in mind!)—I'm eager to break out of my comfort zone of award-winning dramas or folksy documentaries to give something new a chance.

So please, I beg of you: Post a comment and give me your list of must-see movies, personal favorites, or even movies you hate that you think I'd enjoy reviewing! Those are always the most fun, right?

Lurkers awaken! You'd make my year of movie-watching so much more exciting, and it would be a great way to get to know you all better.

Oh, and I've recently compiled all of my reviews in an easy-to-navigate list from A-Z. You can find that list here, or by clicking on the "Reviews" button in the sidebar. I'm eager to see what will be added this year.

  1. Angels with Dirty Faces!
    The Bells of St Marys!
two old comfort foods of mine ;))

    1. I've never seen "Angels with Dirty Faces", which actually surprises me! But I adore "The Bells of St. Marys", and it's been ages since I've seen it. I think a re-visit is in order! =)

      Thanks Killian!

  2. Necromantic, Casino, 3:10 to Yuma (2007), Leon (The Professional), Master and Commander, The Matrix, The Royal Tenenbaums, Interview With A Vampire, Crumb, A Boy and His Dog, Alien, Gladiator.

Let me know if you need to borrow any :)

    1. By the way, this is Tony. Also, you might want to skip Necromantic.

    2. I love these, thank you, Tony! Lots of great recs, many I haven't seen! I've been meaning to watch "Crumb" for years, so I'll have to put that at the top of my list. =)

    3. Well, make sure you let me know when you review any of these (or the ones below) as many are in my top 10.

    4. You'll definitely know, thanks man!

  3. Oh sweet Hay-seus. Heat, Collateral, The Prestige, and Barry Lyndon.

    1. I actually have "Collateral" on DVD and have never seen it. 0.o

I know, that has to be remedied. You've done a great service in reminding me about it.

  4. I Heart Huckabees (a personal favorite)
    Upstream Color
    Ginger Snaps
    I'm Not Scared
    Love Me If You Dare
    Requiem For A Dream
    The Guest

    1. I will, 100%, be watching and reviewing "Teeth" this year. I LOVE that movie. "Videodrome" too, a great one. Most of the others, I haven't seen, some I haven't heard of, great recommendations! "Primer" and "Rubber" are totally new titles for me, I'll have to track them down. :)

      Thanks, Ashleigh!

Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! (Hartlet, 2008)

    1. What a list! Some crazy options, I don't think I've seen ANY of these! I think a bunch are Criterion Collection releases and should be available on Hulu Plus. I'll check them out, thanks, Jonathan!

  7. (sorry I posted this first to the 'Comment' section of your 365 list., instead of
here. I feel so wrong...please forgive me. Oh, and don't tell anyone.)

    Hey Kim,
Nice to see you guys this weekend, or a few hours of it at least.
Thought I'd send you a few titles to (maybe) check out, didn't see
them on your 'lists', although a number of them are obviously film
school staples...some for good reason, maybe others not.
A couple personal notes; Orpheus is the reason they kept producing
black-and-white film stock, imo. Some unbelievably striking shots w/a depth
that adds so much to the feel. Throne Of Blood is my fave retelling of Lord and
Lady Macbeth, w/ great attention to the mystical and magical. Plus, who
doesn't love an ending w/ THAT many arrows?? (OOPS!, Spoiler alert...)
Anyway, if you find something you like, check it out.
Lots o' love for Paddy's Day!!!
    (definitely in no particular order...)
    Orpheus -1950
    The Station Agent -2003
    Mephisto -1981
    Down By Law -1986
    Five Easy Pieces - 1970
    Bread & Chocolate -1974
    Bob Le Flambeur - 1956
    The Apartment - 1960
    The Tin Drum -1979
    The Monster -1994
    Throne of Blood - 1957
    The Conversation - 1974
    Fanny & Alexander - 1982
Once Upon A Time In The West - 1968
    Brazil -1985
    Alphaville -1965
    In The Loop -2009
    City Of Lost Children -1995
    Small Change -1976
The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari -1920
    The Conformist -1970
    Rififi -1955
    Hugo -2011
    Wild Strawberries -1957
    The Killers -1946

    1. Great list, Dad! Only a few I've seen (one I've even reviewed already! "The Apartment"), but this is a great mix, thank you for your suggestions! "City of Lost Children" is one of my favorites, I haven't seen it in years, so I'm likely going to be including it in this review project for sure!

If you ever have any more suggestions, feel free to shoot me a comment, on any Project 365 post! And if something is airing on TCM that I should record, just text me. =)

      Love you!

    2. Agree with Chuck on Throne of Blood - easily the best Macbeth translation! (I own it if you want to borrow it, btw)

Also, Down By Law is awesome. As are The Conformist, Brazil, and Rififi. Fantastic picks!

Additional recommendations: The Invisible Man (Whale, 1933) and The Creature from the Black Lagoon (Arnold, 1954).

    3. I'm loving it, guys! Jonathan, I think like 70% of your recs are on Netflix or Hulu Plus, so that makes it remarkably easy. I'm actually going to watch one of your guys' suggestions tonight. :) You'll have to wait and see which one!

Keep these coming, I have a running list! And yes, Jonathan, I'd love to borrow stuff in April -- and I figured there'll be a lazy night in Hawaii where we can convince Stacy and John to endure one or more of these as well! ;)

      Thank you thank you!

    4. Heh heh heh, didn't think I was going to be mistaken for your Pa, niece Kim
(and Jonathan) when I posted as anonymous.
Sorry about that, but when I put in my real name, all the usual Interpol warnings
started showing up... Yeah, yeah I know...JUST KIDDING!!
Anyway, glad you liked the choices.
      Uncle T.
ps- Jonathan, ever seen Bob le Flambeur? Check it out.

    5. Hey that's what happens when you don't sign your name! You could easily have been my Dad. =P

Still great recs! Like I said, I watched ONE of them last night!
